I firmly believe that the life of art and the art of life are one. Artistic practice and research are inseparable, as both are driven by inquiries into humanity and probing how we, interconnected with everyone and everything, shape the world with its gifts and traumas from history.

Co-exist is a contemporary dance work I created for the Fudan University Student Dance Troupe, commissioned by the Art Education Center of Fudan University. Premiering in Shanghai in 2023, it won First Prize and later claimed the First Prize in Dance Performance and the Excellence Award for Choreography at the 2024 National University Arts Festival in Hubei.

This dynamic work celebrates human connection and individuality, showcasing dancers from diverse backgrounds coming together to share their stories. The inspiration for this piece lies in the connections between living beings—vibrant life encountering life. Having graduated from Fudan University’s School of Philosophy in 2014, returning nearly a decade later to choreograph and dance with the younger generation felt like a journey of rediscovering myself. It became a work dedicated not only to them but also to myself, reflecting on the passage of time and the unchanging power of dance to connect.

Through bold self-expression and seamless movement, the dancers explore themes of “mutual generation” and “coexistence,” embodying the spirit of those living on the Fudan campus in 2023/24, united by their shared passion for dance. As the choreographer, my focus was on how these vibrant individuals in their twenties, with heightened sensitivity and a spirit of exploration, could express themselves freely without being confined to specific stylistic boundaries. By guiding the dancers with somatic practices and movement exploration techniques, I aimed to create a fluid and larger tapestry of expression where each body tells a unique, compelling story. My role was to nurture, support, and connect these voices, allowing them to grow and resonate.

Co-exist invites audiences to experience the beauty of unity in diversity and the profound connections that emerge when people come together to share their stories through movement.
